Phosphor bronze is a member of the family of copper alloys. It is composed of copper that is alloyed with 0.5–11% of tin and 0.01–0.35% phosphorus, and may contain other elements to confer specific properties (e.g. lead at 0.5–3.0% to form free-machining phosphor bronze).

Faces of bronze and aluminum bronze flanges will be machined to a smooth finish over their entire face. Raised, male‐and‐female and/or tongue and groove facings will not be used as they cannot be successfully employed in joints between bronze or aluminum bronze flanges conforming to standards.

Tin bronzes are also called as 'phosphor bronzes' due to the presence of small amount (0.01–0.5%) of phosphorous used as deoxidizer in casting. The wrought alloys usually contain 1–10% tin. Copper containing up to about 6% tin are soft alloys whereas those containing more than 6% tin are hard.

Compared to PB1, PB2 phosphor bronze alloy has slightly increased tin content, giving excellent wear resistance. It offers high strength and good machining characteristics, with good corrosion resistance – especially in the environment of salt water and brine.

Phosphor bronzes are wrought alloys containing copper, tin and phosphorous. The addition of tin increases the corrosion resistance and strength of the alloy and the addition of phosphorous increases its wear resistance and stiffness.
